Cornwood Cricket Club opens its doors this Sunday to any ladies and their families who maybe interested in either learning cricket or considering stepping back into the game.

The club has run a very successful ladies’ division at the club since 2009 and were the county champions for two consecutive seasons over that period.

Team captains Hollie Grafton (1st XI) and Emma Gibson (2nd XI) are looking to build on that success and welcome more female players to supplement the keen players already signed on.

Gibson said: ‘Being the only club in Devon to have two teams competing in league cricket, there is potential to create a fun, yet competitive environment, which encourages potential new lady cricketers to participate in both training and matches.’

Cornwood is a great environment for both cricketers and their families to spend a summer afternoon, with top quality facilities and a beautiful countryside backdrop, that few clubs in the county can better.

The taster session this Sunday starts at 2pm and will run until 5pm.

Club coaches will be on hand to demonstrate some typical coaching drills and weather permitting, some simple games will be run to enable new players to get a flavour for the game.

If you’ve played ball games before like hockey, netball, tennis or squash then you will probably have an eye for the ball and that is a very good starting point for picking up the basics of the game, said the club’s development officer Nick Goodliffe.

In addition to potential female players, girls from the age of 14 upwards are also welcome to come along and try their hand.

The intention is to make this fun event, where partners and families are also welcome to attend, have a drink at the bar, while watching the cricket from the comfort of the pavilion.

A complimentary glass of prosecco and nibbles will be provided to all participants on the day, so why not come along and give it a try?
