Bigbury Golf Club

A brilliant summer of golf for our talented club professional Tracy Loveys writes Rosemary Sharps.

Not only did she win the WPGA professional championship for the fourth time, she has just claimed another title when she retained the West Region WPGA Championship, a title she won last year in its inaugural staging.

Tracy was already recognized as one of the most successful ladies in the WPGA Championship tournament’s history with three successive wins in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Her experience proved invaluable at the challenging Burnham and Berrow course.

After round one Tracy was two shots ahead of the field and during round two was partnered with a former winner of the title.

As Tracy describes it, after being level for the first nine holes they exchanged birdies and bogeys until the 18th hole, where she faced a 12-foot putt to seal the championship.

Job done as her cracking putt disappeared down the hole.

After her win Tracy said that it was an honour to have won the title for a fourth time, especially after finishing runner-up a few times recently and that the moral of the story is ‘never give up’

A few weeks later we were once again able to congratulate Tracy on her win at the West Region WPGA Championship, played at the testing Chipping Sodbury course where, in atrocious weather, Tracy finished day one with a three-shot lead over her nearest rivals.

Day two saw Tracy consolidate her lead to come home comfortably and win by five shots to retain the title and the beautiful crystal jug to add to the prestigious title and silver platter that she had recaptured at Burnham and Berrow.

A great achievement, considering that her teaching schedules do not allow for her own practice sessions, reported Nigel Blenkarne, who added: ‘Well done Tracy, we do realise how fortunate we are to have you, keep up the good work.’

Scoring remains high for the men’s midweek stableford and heading the field of nearly 100 competitors was Peter Cooper (6) with a great 41 points.

D Barker (12) and Martyn Scarterfield (5) came second with 39 points each and Rob Davies (21) scored 37 points for third.

A further six players, R White (16), Del Miller (17) David Thorne (16), Paul Jeffery (16), Kevin Rowe (26) and Carl Firminger (22), all came in on handicap with 36 points.

Alan Best, organiser of the mixed friendly matches, was pleased to announce that Bigbury took Dainton to a draw on Saturday on their return match at Dainton Park, the weather started off in true bank holiday fashion, with rain, but the rain cleared and although the sun never shone, everyone agreed it was a great afternoon with a friendly score.
