Crafty cops caught more than a hundred dodgy drivers during a crackdown on idiot motorists on one of the region's busiest roads.

Devon and Cornwall Police spent the day patrolling the A379 between Dartmouth and Plymouth on Thursday, August 22.

Officers said 157 motorists were fined, educated or sent to court for traffic offences as a result of the clampdown.

One foolish driver was even caught going 50mph through the village of Brixton – completely ignoring the 30mph limit in place.

In Yealmpton, police caught a driver going 38mph through the 30mph area.

While on Billacombe Road in Plymstock, 81 drivers and five motorcyclists were caught going over the speed limit.

This included two cars and two motorbikes caught going around 55mph in the 30mph zone.

And police say they'll be going back to patrol the area soon.

PC Ralph Delbridge, of the Devon and Cornwall Police No Excuse team, said: “We will continue to ensure that our efforts are targeted towards those drivers who put others at risk.

“This road takes in numerous residential areas and has a mix of speed limits which are in place to help safeguard all those using the roads.

“If a small minority drive in contravention of the law they can expect our attention and if that results in a disqualification from driving through points accumulation they have only themselves to blame.

“Everyone should be able to use our road network without fear of harm coming to them.

“This is part of our objective in support of the Safe Systems approach to road safety, targeting the Fatal Five.

“The A379 is a road we will be revisiting.”

The teams used a mixture of marked and unmarked roads vehicles in the operation.

Drivers were caught for offences including speeding, driving without an MOT, using a phone behind the wheel, driving without insurance, not being in proper control of a vehicle, driving without road tax, driving without a seatbelt, driving without a license and driving with eyesight below the minimum standard.
