South Hams endurance athlete Fin Saunders travelled to Mexico this week to race in the 35-39 age group World Triathlon Championships for Team GB.

He competed on Thursday, September 15, at the Fonatur Triathlon park in Cozumel in 39-degree heat in the sprint distance Triathlon.

Fin has put in a numerous amount of hours training for this race, including heat training up to 40 degrees to try to get his body ready for Mexico’s unforgiving climate.

Fin, from Ivybridge, had a fantastic race against some great athletes, finishing ninth overall out of 89 competitors and having the honour of being the first GB athlete over the line.

He came out from the 750m swim in 27th place after a personal best of 11.18, finished the 20km bike course in first place in a time of 28.32 and completed the 5km run in 21st place in 20.06, which gave him the overall place as ninth fastest in the world in his age group.

He was second fastest in transition one (swim to bike) and fifth fastest in transition two (bike to run)

He gave it everything he could during the race and collapsed over the finish line in a very respectable position.

Fin’s next challenge is on September 29, where he will be completing a 24hr sponsored triathlon at McCaulays Gym in Ivybridge to raise money for Myeloma UK, Exeter Leukaemia Fund and the North Devon Hospice.
