The quarter-finals of the Farley Trophy on Tuesday was Ivybridge's first fixture this week writes John Garner.

The opponents were Devonport Park, who defeated the mighty Plymstock in the last round. Played on their home green, the Ivies side got off to a great start, winning both of the singles games.

Men's captain Roland Lugger played the four woods and, after suffering a few nervous moments when his commanding lead was reduced to just one shot, finally came through 21-18.

The two wood singles was in the hands of Dave Taylor. This proved to be close for the whole game, but it was won by Taylor when he scored two singles on the last two ends. He also won 21-18.

Dave Moulder and Dave Fourte played the pairs. They were soundly beaten 13-25. The triples consisted of Brian Harman, Larry Ireland and skip Eric Bennett and they proved to be the rink which clinched the match.

They were never headed and finished with a winning score of 22-12. With the match already over, the fours of Tony Plant, John Cann, Chris Bufton and skip Dave Crisp called it a day with three ends left to play. At that point they were trailing 15-16. The semi-final is against North Down on July 21, another tough challenge.

Thursday saw the team off to Yealmpton for an Evening League game.

The small size of the green normally proves very tricky for visiting teams, but there were some very strange runs on the rinks that caught both sides out. However, the home advantage shone through, with only the rink skipped by Roland Lugger aided by Nick Randall, Brian Harman and Chris Bufton managing a win 20-17.

John Chaplin, Dave Gibbs and Larry Ireland with skip Eric Bennett lost 16-22, Mike Hexter, Paul Morgan, Dave Taylor with skip John Cann went down 12-19.

Completing the scores, Fred Hawkes, Geoff Brimblecombe, Dave Fourte and skip Grenville Barnett were defeated 11-26.

The Saturday League fixture this week was away to Plympton. Ivybridge got off to a great start and were leading 40-24 after the first eight ends.

Unfortunately, it was all downhill from that point, with Plympton gaining 30 shots in the second period.

After the break it was much of the same as another six shots went the way of the home side. To rub salt in the wounds they also won the last session by two shots.

Ivybridge had one outstanding rink with Paul Morgan, Frank Sanders, Larry Ireland and skip Eric Bennett winning 44-19. Peter Bray, Brian Harman, Roland Lugger and skip Dave Crisp finished drawing 32-32.

Terry Coltham, Arthur Baxendale with Dave Taylor and skip Grenville Barnett lost 25-31, but it was the rink of Mike Hexter, Dave Fourte, Chris Bufton and Stan Parsons (skip) that were on the receiving end, losing 10-52.

This gave Plympton the win by 111-133.

Three Ivybridge bowlers, Dolly Tyler, Anne Ashley and Larraine Lawrence, were honoured to receive their Devon county badges and blazers from the incumbent president Margaret Brotheridge writes Anne Ashley.

The ladies achieved this honour by accruing valuable 'county points' at qualifying matches throughout the past seasons.

They have been selected to play in their first full match as Devon ladies early in September at Brixham.
