A car crashed into a telegraph pole in the South Hams – closing one of the region’s busiest roads for more than three hours.

It happened on the A379 between Brixton and Plymouth at about 3.35pm on Monday.

The pole came down into the road, blocking it in both directions between Chittleburn Cross and the Elburton Road roundabout.

Drivers were redirected through nearby lanes, causing slow traffic and delays in the area.

The driver was not injured in the crash and police say no one else was hurt.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at around 3.35pm on Monday, October 21.

“It was reported that a car had collided with a utility pole on Elburton Road in Plymouth.

“Ambulance and fire services were also called to the scene.

“There were no reports of any injuries.

“A full road closure was in place at the Texaco garage at Brixton while emergency services were in attendance.

“The road was reopened at 6.45pm.”
